VETS Budget Planner

Estimate how your VA benefits, scholarships, and grants stack against Baylor charges — then plan month by month.

Read this first — these are estimates only

This tool produces a rough estimate based on the figures you enter. It is not a bill, an award letter, or a promise of benefits. Your actual tuition, fees, financial aid, and VA benefits may differ — sometimes substantially — from what you see here.

Rates change, eligibility depends on your Certificate of Eligibility and certified enrollment, and aid packages are determined individually. Verify every figure that affects a real decision with the offices below before you enroll, sign a lease, take out a loan, or turn down aid.

Baylor University and the VETS Program make no guarantee of the accuracy of these estimates and accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of them.

How this works

Four steps, about ten minutes: 1) Fill in this tab — your program, benefit, terms, aid, and expenses. 2) Check the Semester aid tab to see how your benefits stack against Baylor’s bill, step by step. 3) Pick a Debt payoff plan — the payments you choose there flow straight into your budget. 4) Use Month by month to see your cash flow — including the tight weeks at the start of each term before aid disburses. Everything updates as you type and nothing you enter leaves your device. When you’re done, Save plan (PDF) gives you a printable summary report of it all — and that same PDF reloads your work later via Load file.

Your program

Your degree level and benefit chapter determine which rules apply. Yellow Ribbon at Baylor is undergraduate only.

This short list is a check, not a catalog: it holds only programs with special GI Bill status — suspended under the 85/15 rule, plus graduate Yellow Ribbon opt-ins. Most Baylor programs aren’t on it. If yours isn’t listed, that’s good news — keep “not on this list.”

How do I find my eligibility percentage?
It's on your Certificate of Eligibility from the VA, based on your qualifying active-duty service after September 10, 2001. Only students at 100% qualify for Yellow Ribbon. If you're unsure, the Baylor VA Education Benefits office can check: 254.710.8870.

Enrollment by term

Enter the credit hours you plan to take in each term. Housing allowance depends on how many hours you carry relative to full time for that term's length, so a 3-hour minimester can still pay at the full-time rate.

Scholarships and grants

Enter what you expect per term. Tuition-restricted awards are applied to your bill before VA benefits — that's a VA requirement, and it's why a tuition scholarship may not change what you actually pocket.

Why didn't my scholarship help?
If Post-9/11 already covers your full tuition and fees, a tuition-restricted scholarship just replaces money the VA would have paid. It doesn't reach your pocket. Departmental awards that aren't tuition-restricted do reach you — worth asking the awarding department to confirm which kind yours is.

Federal student loans

If you filed the FAFSA, your award letter may offer federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans. These are optional — you choose to accept all, part, or none of each. Enter only what you plan to accept for the year, and research these and other loan options at Baylor One Stop: Loans.

Subsidized vs. unsubsidized — what's the difference?
Subsidized loans are need-based and undergraduate-only. The government pays the interest while you're enrolled at least half time and for six months after you leave — so the amount you borrow is the amount you'll start repaying. Unsubsidized loans are open to undergraduate, graduate, and Law students regardless of need, but interest starts building the day the money disburses; paying that interest as you go keeps the balance from growing while you're in school. Both require the FAFSA and at least half-time enrollment, both carry a fixed rate for the life of the loan, and neither requires payments while you're enrolled at least half time or during the six-month grace period after. Full details at studentaid.gov and Baylor One Stop: Loans.
Should I accept these loans?
Loans come last, after free money. If your GI Bill benefits, scholarships, and grants already cover your bill — check the Semester detail tab — borrowing adds debt, not necessity. If there's a real gap, accept subsidized before unsubsidized, and accept only what you need: you can take part of an offer, decline the rest, and even cancel a loan within 120 days of disbursement as if it never happened. Two costs are easy to miss: an origination fee is withheld from every disbursement, yet you repay the full amount borrowed; and repayment starts six months after you drop below half time — which a skipped semester can trigger sooner than you expect. Loans don't reduce your VA benefits, but your combined aid can't exceed Baylor's cost of attendance, so One Stop may adjust amounts. First-time borrowers complete entrance counseling and a Master Promissory Note at studentaid.gov. Accept or decline each loan through your Baylor financial aid portal, or ask One Stop to walk you through it.

Housing, meals, and parking

Pick the plans you intend to use. None of these are covered by Post-9/11 tuition benefits or Yellow Ribbon — they land on your bill. Housing and meals are charged in your main terms (Fall and Spring); parking is annual.

Loans and credit cards

List every balance you're carrying. The Debt payoff tab decides payoff order — snowball, avalanche, or a custom order you set yourself. The monthly interest rate is calculated from the APR. Don't list this year's federal student loans here — no payments are due on those while you're enrolled, so they belong in the Federal student loans section above. Minimum is the total you pay each month, including any flat monthly fee — a $250 fee means your real minimum is at least $250, and only what you pay beyond the fee ever touches the balance. Loans with a $0 balance are left out of the payoff plan and the monthly budget.

NameBalanceAPR % Monthly rateMinimumMonthly fee
What's a monthly fee?
Payday and title loans often charge a flat fee each cycle on top of interest. Enter that here so the payoff projection reflects what you actually owe. A $538 fee on a $2,036 balance is not unusual and is worth seeing plainly.
